Standardized water extract is the subject of a stalled Novel Food application. EFSA's December 2021 NDA Panel opinion identified positive in vitro chromosome aberration and in vivo comet assay findings, concluding 'the safety of NF has not been established under any condition of use.' The application has not been approved. Crude/dried root material may have a different status if a credible pre-1997 history of EU food use can be demonstrated, but most commercial products use standardized extracts and are therefore non-compliant with Novel Food rules.
